A recent enquiry made me realise that all matters around prostate health are not a usual point of discussion and asking for help or advice is quite difficult. Therefore this educational blog will be all about prostate health and how PEMF therapy can support the prostate, to answer your questions before you even need to ask them.
We hope that this will encourage you to use your therapy to better your health, educate you on the prostate and its functions and understand your body better.
The prostate is a smallish, rubbery gland situated deep inside the groin directly below the bladder. Interestingly, this is also where the prostate got its name from – in Greek, it means “one who stands before” as the prostate stands before the bladder if viewed from below. A gland is an organ that produces substances to release either into the bloodstream or into a duct.
The prostate supplies part of the seminal fluid which is crucial for healthy sperm and therefore reproduction. The seminal fluid contains PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), spermine, zinc, citrate and fructose – all important for healthy, mobile sperm – but it also contains substances that protect the urinary tract against pathogens. Not only does the prostate produce part of the semen, but it is also responsible for forcefully pressing the semen into the urethra and outward during ejaculation as it contains many smooth muscles.
The prostate grows during puberty under the control of testosterone. The prostate also transforms testosterone to its biologically active form dihydrotestosterone. The prostate is divided into three zones.
PEMF therapy for prostate health
One of the key benefits of PEMF therapy is to reduce inflammation, also in the prostate. By reducing inflammation, improving circulation and cellular function PEMF therapy reduces overall tissue hypoxia in the prostate. This helps to prevent prostatitis and improve Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is an enlargement of the prostate gland that is a common age-related disease in men.
A few studies investigated the effects of PEMF therapy in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. A pilot study done in 2020 showed rapid relief of symptoms and a significant reduction in prostate volume after 28 days of treatment. Other studies showed a significant improvement in urinary tract symptoms like urine flow and urine residue.
As PEMF therapy is non-invasive and safe to use it should be an integral part of taking care of your prostate health as it has shown to be effective.
Available programs on our MyBio Pulser and Tracer devices are Inflammation, Lymph drainage, Cell healing, Prostate problems, Hormonal imbalance, DNA integrity, Prostate_enlarged and even programs specific to prostatitis and homoeopathic frequencies.
Create prostate-specific groups to alternate on your treatment mat during the night. This way you can treat with more frequencies and have longer exposure to the frequencies.
If you have a MyBio product we can assist you with a personalised treatment schedule.
Food and supplements
There is plenty of evidence showing that good nutrition and an active lifestyle reduce the risk of prostate problems and may slow the progression of prostate cancer. Here are some of the recommended foods to add to your diet:
Cruciferous vegetables
These include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy and more. They are packed with antioxidants and, most importantly, Sulforaphane and glucoraphanin, which have a protective role against prostate cancer. These veggies also reduce inflammation. You can read a summary of studies that connect broccoli with prostate cancer prevention.
Berries
Berries are also high in antioxidants, specifically anthocyanins. Antioxidants help to neutralise and remove free radicals from our bodies. This is important as free radicals cause DNA damage which may lead to abnormal DNA and cell formation. A diet high in antioxidants prevents free radical damage to our cells.
Fats
Cold-water fish that provide good anti-inflammatory fats help to prevent inflammation of the prostate. Salmon and other dark-meat fish appear to be the best choices. When choosing oil to use in your cooking avoid vegetable oils and rather opt for olive oil or avocado oil. Vegetable oils are very inflammatory, which creates an unhealthy cellular environment.
Tomatoes
Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes and a diet high in lycopene also shows a higher level of lycopene in the prostate specifically. So eating tomatoes does target the prostate. Cook your tomatoes in olive oil to help with lycopene absorption.
Green tea
We know green tea has anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic properties, meaning it keeps your cells healthy and prevents cellular mutations that may lead to cancer. A published systematic review actually shows that drinking seven cups of green tea per day reduces your risk of prostate cancer. Green tea is high in antioxidants and good for your overall health, but also prostate health in particular.
This is a highlight of recommended foods, but the list can be so much more extensive. The bottom line is to avoid refined sugars and processed food and have a diet high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods.
A healthy, whole-food diet is more important than supplements and although research is not conclusive and sometimes gives mixed results on how supplements support prostate health some studies do show positive results. Here are some of the supplements that are supported by science:
Saw palmetto: This may help with some of the symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate like the constant need to urinate.
Selenium: Some studies show that it may help to protect the prostate against cancer.
Zinc: Zinc is more concentrated in the prostate. It may play a protective role, but high dosages of zinc has a negative effect on the prostate.
Beta-sitosterol: This plant chemical may reduce prostate swelling and relieve some of the symptoms experienced due to an enlarged prostate.
Other lifestyle factors are all the well-known changes we know improve health overall like daily exercise, stopping smoking, reducing your stress levels, maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough sleep and sunlight.
Symptoms you shouldn’t ignore
By understanding where the prostate is located and which structures pass through the prostate, one can recognize why an enlarged prostate is problematic and how it can cause specific symptoms.
Even though an enlarged prostate may be described as common in older age, it is not normal and symptoms should not be ignored. Early detection ensures prompt treatment and lifestyle changes and may prevent cancer.
The most common sign of prostate problems is difficulty urinating. As the gland enlarges, the opening from the bladder narrows and limits the flow of urine.
Most symptoms are therefore related to urination like frequent urination, weak urine flow, the feeling that you cannot empty your bladder completely, waking up at night to urinate and a sudden urge to urinate that you cannot delay.
These symptoms should not be ignored and will probably not go away on their own. It is important to receive an examination from a medical professional when you experience these symptoms, especially as an enlarged prostate may not always be benign and does have the potential to be cancerous.
Further, an enlarged prostate may lead to bladder and kidney problems because of urine flow restriction.
Examinations that can be done is a PSA blood test – remember PSA is produced by the prostate and increased levels may indicate a problem. Further, an ultrasound and digital rectal examination can be done. The prostate lies directly in front of the rectum and can be palpated through the rectum.
Know that you are in control of your health, educate yourself and do not be shy to ask for help when you notice these changes. The symptoms of an enlarged prostate can be treated and you can improve your quality of life.
