With thousands of research studies published on Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy, its effectiveness is well-documented and irrefutable. Unfortunately, claiming that only one intensity level is effective is not accurate and confuses those needing this therapy.
Intensity surely matters and it is important to understand that both high-intensity and low-intensity treatments have their benefits and both may alleviate pain and inflammation according to the research. But we want more than a suppression of symptoms, we want to heal, we want to regenerate, we want our bodies to thrive. The application and intensity of PEMF therapy affect how the body cells, tissues and organs respond. Three of the multiple factors that play a role in PEMF therapy are the intensity of the electromagnetic fields, the duration of exposure and the frequency.
Before we go into the details, here are five reasons why we advocate for using low-intensity PEMF therapy:
1. Supports Cellular Regeneration
Low-intensity PEMF therapy stimulates cellular repair and regeneration by enhancing ion exchange and cell membrane potential. This can help optimize the body’s natural healing processes. The body can heal itself – this therapy supports that process.
2. Reduces Pain and Inflammation
By improving blood circulation and reducing oxidative stress, low-intensity PEMF therapy can alleviate pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
3. Improves Sleep Quality
Low-intensity PEMF therapy can help regulate circadian rhythms and promote relaxation by reducing stress hormone levels, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. It also reduces stress by relaxing your tensed muscles.
4. Boosts Energy and Recovery
It enhances ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in cells, providing more energy for cellular functions and accelerating recovery after physical exertion, infection or injury.
5. Safe and Non-Invasive
Low-intensity PEMF therapy is gentle and does not involve medications or invasive procedures, making it a safe option for long-term use and suitable for individuals with sensitive systems.
We are slowly building a collection of research done on PEMF therapy for your convenience which you can view here.
The higher the intensity of PEMF application, the greater the electromagnetic fields induced in the body tissues. However, the key question remains: “Do tissues require a high electromagnetic field to achieve health benefits?” Our answer is a resounding NO.
When we consider that our bodies were Created in the Earth’s magnetic field of about 25 – 65 microtesla and our cellular electrical potential is around 70mV, we also need to consider that exposure to high-intensity fields is not what our bodies are used to nor the range in which our cells function optimally. Exposure to high-intensity PEMFs may stress the nervous system and body cells which may fatigue the autonomic nervous system as well as the cardiovascular system. In other words, it may induce a stress response in the body. Our goal with PEMF therapy is to create relaxation and homeostasis for the body to go into “rest and digest”, and to create a cellular environment where the body can heal itself. A body with an infection, inflammation or injury does not need more stressors, but rather the opposite. Our body has the beautiful ability to heal itself, we want to support that ability, not overwhelm it.
When we activate the parasympathetic nervous system and improve our sleep quality then we boost our body’s healing ability.
Studies done by NASA show that the use of extremely low-intensity electromagnetic fields, below that of the Earth’s magnetic field, exerts a “very potent effect on the proliferation, morphology, and gene expression of the cells in culture”. These low-intensity treatments had a positive effect on tissue repair and cellular regeneration. The authors of the extended study reported that they believe that nearly all tissues, in particular neural, are susceptible to the influences of low-level electromagnetic fields. The Earth’s magnetic field does not clobber us, it is gentle and soft, stimulating and caressing our cells.
Apart from some people being sensitive to high-intensity treatments, these treatments also cannot be done daily. Treatment sessions are only short due to the high intensity. On the other hand, low-intensity treatments allow for daily exposure to these healing frequencies. We see great value in longer duration, frequent and low-intensity exposure to PEMFs. This is why we recommend using the treatment mat for nighttime treatments.
Further, high-intensity magnetic coils limit the frequencies that can be applied during therapy and therefore most of them only rely on one or two frequencies for treatment. When using the combination of low-intensity direct electrical and longitudinal magnetic application of PEMFs we have the whole range of 1–50000Hz available to use for healing (although we mostly utilise 1–10000Hz). We can therefore, again, support the healing of the body, not just by treating in the low-intensity range where the body thrives, but also by using many different healing frequencies.
If you are not sure where to start your low-intensity treatments you can opt for the Schumann Resonance frequencies. These frequencies are familiar to the body and well-documented to have many benefits. Choose to do this program on repeat with your treatment mat while sleeping for at least one week.
We love to start anyone new to the therapy on a group with Calming and Relaxation, Inflammation, Lymph drainage and General Healing Top 18 for at least 3-4 nights. This group is both calming and healing and will also be used for nighttime treatments. Even if you are a seasoned user of this therapy it is still a good idea to use some of the general and calming frequencies to activate your parasympathetic nervous system and support your body’s innate ability to heal.
